Learn More about Nicole Wilcox

Read Nicole’s story and find out how The Nicole Wilcox Foundation was started in Powell, Ohio. The Nicole Wilcox Foundation was started in memory of Nicole Wilcox, who grew up in Fostoria, Ohio, about 75 miles NW of Columbus.

Early Years
Nicole was the daughter of David and Jacqueline Moore of Fostoria and sister of Danielle King of Columbus. She went to college on the east coast in Salisbury, Maryland, and graduated with a degree in Education in 1990 from Salisbury State University. She stayed out on the east coast, and lived in Ocean City, Maryland, for a couple of years, and then moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where she lived there for 2 years. After being out on the east coast for nearly 8 years, Nicole decided to move back to Ohio to be closer to her family in the fall of 1995.

Family Life
Nicole met Randy Wilcox in 1996, and 2 years later, she and Randy were married in September of 1998. Nicole became pregnant soon after and then, in April of 1999, she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer at the age of 32. Because Nicole was 9 months pregnant at that time, they decided to induce her labor, because they needed to start chemotherapy right away. She had a beautiful baby girl: Riley Marie on May 27, 1999.

Chemo Treatments
Nicole started her chemotherapy treatments, which were not easy. The side effects from the chemo, along with trying to raise her newborn baby girl, made Nicole very weak and sick. Randy was by her side but still wanted to do something to help make an impact on Nicole’s fight against cancer. Randy approached his long-time friend Rob Harvey to come up with an idea for raising money and awareness for breast cancer. They both decided that a golf outing was the way to go. They pulled together, with the help of family and friends, the first annual Scramble for a Cure in October 1999. They gathered approximately 80 golfers and raised $4,000.

Nicole’s Fight
Nicole continued to fight her cancer, and at the second annual Scramble for Cure in 2000, had announced that she was cancer-free while she played in the golf outing with her family. Unfortunately, Nicole was only cancer-free for 2 months, and found out that the cancer had metastasized to her lungs. Nicole fought this deadly disease for the next couple of months and then on December 22, 2000, Nicole Wilcox lost her fight to cancer. She left behind a wonderful husband and daughter and that loved her so much, as well as many friends and family that will miss her dearly. The Scramble for a Cure is still going strong today and we hope to keep raising money and awareness about this disease in Nicole’s memory.
